Matthew Holbeche Bloxam (12 May – 24 April ), a native of Rugby, Warwickshire, England, was a Warwickshire antiquary and amateur archeologist, author of a popular guide to Gothic architecture. He was the original source of the legend of William Webb Ellis' invention of the game of Rugby football.
Biography
[edit]Bloxam was born on 12 May at Rugby, son of the Rev. Richard Rouse Bloxam, an assistant master at Rugby School, and his wife Ann, sister of Sir Thomas Lawrence He was one of ten children, his brothers including Andrew Bloxam and John Rouse Bloxam.[1]
Bloxam was educated at Elborow School before attending Rugby School between and In he was articled to George Harris, a solicitor in Rugby.[1] He did not find success in the profession when he went into practice on his own account, and in he became clerk of the court, a post he held for 40 years.
He is remembered as an antiquarian on Rugby and the surrounding area. In he successfully located the Roman town of Tripontium nearby. His work was published in two books and many journal articles; although many of his conclusions are now thought doubtful, his collection of archaeological finds still exists. Biography
Bloxam, a self-made businessman apprenticed to a London stationer in , rose to be principal of the firm of Foudrinier, Bloxam and Walker, wholesale stationers, of Lombard Street: by he could claim that they were ‘the first wholesale house in London’.1 As sheriff of London he interested himself in the treatment of arrested debtors and founded the sheriffs’ fund for debtors.2 His return for Maidstone as a ministerial supporter in was sponsored by John Brenchley of the Southwark bank, whose partnership (Sanderson, Harrison and Brenchley of St. Margaret’s Hill) Bloxam joined in
