Her birth name was Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid, but she was later renamed Iman, meaning "faith" in Arabic, by her grandfather³. She is the daughter of Mariam, a gynecologist, and Mohamed Abdulmajid, a diplomat and former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia³. She has four siblings: two brothers and two sisters.
Iman spent most of her childhood and adolescence in Egypt, where she attended boarding school. She briefly studied political science at the University of Nairobi in Kenya in ³, but her life changed when she was discovered by American photographer Peter Beard, who convinced her to move to the United States and pursue a modeling career.
