  • Caravaggio exhibition in Milan, amid some new discoveries and parades of masterpieces

Review of the exhibition 'Inside Caravaggio,' in Milan, Palazzo Reale, from September 29, to January 28,

Announced as one of this year’s event-exhibitions and even sold out even before the official opening on September 29, with more than sixty thousand tickets sold (and sold out in advance), the visit to the exhibition Dentro Caravaggio, which Palazzo Reale in Milan dedicates until January 28, to the art of the great Michelangelo Merisi, better known as Caravaggio, presupposed no small expectations. The angel advised Joseph to flee with Mary and the Child into Egypt. The flight has been variously presented in narrative depictions, based on medieval legends in which angels were said to accompany the Holy Family. 13 Thus an angel is included in Caravaggio's Rest on the Flight into Egypt (Riposto durante la fuga in Egitto), c. (figure 2). Art historians have variously interpreted the centrally placed viol 14 playing angel, his appearance, purpose and relationship with the elderly Joseph, in this early religious work by Caravaggio, as quoted below.

Focussing on the depiction of the interacting group formed by the winged youth and Joseph who holds his musical score, Irving Lavin ( 3) avers: "Caravaggio gives him [Joseph] the spiritual job of literally sustaining the heavenly music." 15 Paul Barolsky ( 20) gives a poet
