Hailing from Mafikeng, brothers Heemal and Aashish Gangaram and Matthew Bowen came together to form Ganja Beatz and have become one of the countries’ top hitmakers, producing for the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Riky Rick, YoungstaCPT, Stogie T and Nadia Nakai. The trio visited Red Bull Studios Cape Town for a week of beat making and recording with some of the city’s freshest MCs, vocalists and producers. We caught up with them to find out how it all started, how things have evolved, they’re move into the advertising industry, artist management and what they’ve been working on in studio.
Do you think working with guys like Cassper Nyovest and Riky Rick early in their career helped you get your foot in the door?
Matthew: We all came up together. So it was us making beats and those guys recording and us blowing up together at the same time. It was in a weird way a foot in the door but it just so happens that we all came up together. It’s not like we were working with top artists which we knew from whatever. It’s just, like everybody, you have your group of friends that you’re recording or that you know. Mainly it was Aashish being in primary school with Cassper and fiddling with music got them started.
