Bob Braun entertained ‘morning, noon and night’

For more than a quarter century, TV viewers throughout Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and the Midwest spent their weekday lunch hour with entertainer Bob Braun.

Braun, who died in 2001, was a regular on Ruth Lyon’s top-rated “50-50 Club” on WLWT-TV in the late 1950s, then took over the show when she retired in 1967 and hosted it for 17 years.

The “Bob Braun Show” finale was broadcast 30 years ago – on Sept. 7, 1984 – ending a 35-year tradition of a live noon variety show here.

Viewers tuned in to see Braun’s cast of singers and musicians as much as they enjoyed his celebrity guests. Even the commercials – all live – were entertaining because of the spontaneity. This resulted in a special bond with viewers on Channel 5 and stations in Dayton, Columbus, Indianapolis, Louisville, Lexington, Huntington, Charleston, Nashville and Knoxville.

“Our audience felt like we were all a part of the family. We were in their living room every day at noon. They felt like they knew each of us personally,” said Nancy James, a singer on the show (1974-83).

Colleen Sharp Murray, a former Lyons and Braun show singer, described the live TV show in the 1960s and ’70 as “reality TV, Facebook and ‘Entertainment Tonight’ all rolled into one.”

The Paul Dixon Show was an American television variety program originating in Cincinnati on WLWT Television beginning in 1955 and ending in December 1974, following Dixon's death. The show began as a 30-minute series expanding to 90 minutes in the 1960s, but the other stations along the Crosley/Avco regional television network in nearby Dayton, Columbus and Indianapolis only ran 60 minutes of the show. Pre-recorded episodes were sold to other markets throughout the Midwest.

The show was originally co-hosted by Bonnie Lou and Marian Spelman, who was later replaced by Colleen Sharp. The house band, originally called The Bel-Aires, was led by pianist Bruce Brownfield.
