This book reads like the author is reviewing Vivaldi’s music. The problem with that is I already realize the brilliance of his music, and don’t need the author to break down the intricacies of Vivaldi’s “arias” or his operas. Even as he decides to take a deeper dive into the theory of his pieces, the author makes zero attempt to make the “musical language” understandable. It’s almost as if he’s writing it for himself.

The author also opens many vague statements without closing them or providing more detail. This part just kills me:

“The letter that Vivaldi sent on the same day to Bentivoglio is the most important and revealing personal document we have from his hand.”

The author then vaguely summarizes what this letter is about and quickly transitions back into the brilliance of his music and operas. Like, my guy, SHOW ME THE LETTER lmao.

Not worth the read if you’re trying to learn more about Vivaldi. Ain’t need no damn guy to explain music to me when you can hear it. Hard pass.

Regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers, Vivaldi's influence during his lifetime was widespread across Europe, giving origin to many imitators and admirers. He pioneered many developments in orchestration, violin technique and programmatic music. He consolidated the emerging concerto form, especially the solo concerto, into a widely accepted and followed idiom.

Vivaldi composed many instrumental concertos, for the violin and a variety of other musical instruments, as well as sacred choral works and more than fifty operas. His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons. Many of his compositions were written for the all-female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietà, a home for abandoned children. Vivaldi began studying for the Catholic priesthood at
