The Federal Government (FG) has expressed shock over the death of former Chief of General Staff (CGS), Lt. General Donaldson Oladipo Oyeyinka Diya (rtd).
Diya, who served as CGS to the late Head of State, Gen. Sani Abacha, died on Sunday morning.
He would have turned 79 on April 3.
Mr Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), conveyed the Federal Executive Council (FEC) condolences in a statement issued by Mr Willie Bassey, Director of Information, office of the SGF on Sunday in Abuja.
According to Mustapha, the Federal Executive Council received with shock the death of Diya.
Mustapha said Diya was a seasoned military officer with admirable administrative capabilities in the various functions he served the country.
He also described late Diya as a notable statesman who made invaluable contributions to nation-building.
“FEC condoles with the government and people of Ogun State, his family and friends, and prays to God to grant the soul of the deceased eternal rest,” Mustapha said.
Diya was born on April 3, 1944 in Odogbolu, Ogun State.
He was the military governor of Ogun State from January 1984 to August 1985.

Olanrewaju Replaces George Finidi as Enyimba FC Head Coach
Enyimba FC has announced Yemi Olanrewaju as the new head coach for the remainder of the season, succeeding Finidi George.
Olanrewaju, who previously served as Finidi's assistant, takes over after Finidi left his position last month to become the head coach of Nigeria's senior national team, the Super Eagles.
"In light of Coach George’s departure, Enyimba FC is pleased to announce the promotion of Assistant Coach Olanrewaju Yemi Daniel to the position of Head Coach until the end of the season.
"Coach Daniel has been an integral part of the coaching staff, demonstrating his commitment, expertise, and leadership qualities throughout his tenure," the Nigeria Premier Football League champions said in a statement released on Thursday.
Olanrewaju, currently pursuing his UEFA B license in Scotland, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has previously worked as an assistant coach with the now-defunct MFM FC and Nigeria’s U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets.
Enyimba FC is optimistic that his expertise and leadership will guide the team successfully through the rest of the season.
